Madeleine L’Engle
Born: November 29, 1918 Died: September 6, 2007
Madeleine was born Novebmer 29,
1918 in Syracuse,
New York. She
was the only child of parents who were artists at heart. As you can imagine, this upbringing led her to be encouraged in art
of all kinds! Madeleine took to writing early on, penning her own biography when
she was only five years old.
When Madeleine was forty-one years
old, she wrote the book A Wrinkle in Time. It was actually rejected by over twenty
publishing companies. Three years later, it was finally published by a smaller
company, and ended up winning many awards, including the Lewis Carroll shelf award and even the Newbery Medal.
Madeleine continued writing books,
including A Wind In the Door, A Swiftly Tilting Planet, and The Joys of Love – which was her last published work.
I chose to write about Madeleine
L’Engle for a few reasons. The first time I read A Wrinkle in Time I was
absolutely amazed. I had never read “fantasy” stories before, let
alone fantasy that quoted the Bible. The way that she wrote took my imagination
to places that it had never been. I couldn’t before comprehend a world
in which science fiction could be real. Madeleine’s work and love of writing
and God helped me to grow deeper as a person in so many ways.
