Genre and Literary Elements

(Genre) Graphic Novels:

Graphic novels are one of the most fun literature genre's to get into!  Don't believe me?  Who doesn't like reading the "Sunday funnies"?  What about if you had your favorite Sunday newspaper cartoon in book form?
Ahhh....Peanuts...Calvin and Hobbes...Archie...All of these are considered Graphic novels.
I admittedly thought that "graphic novels" refered to anime and manga...two genres that I am less that passionate about.  Talk to me about the Far Side though, and I could read them for days!
Graphic Novels are basically cartoons in book form.  Their themes tend to be (but are not limited to) adult themes.  Not dirty themes!  Themes that adults can appreciate!
Adults need the chance to be kids again once in a while, and one of the things that adults have to push aside "for goodness sakes, we're growing up", is cartoons.  Graphic novels makes that timeless kid experience once again cool and acceptable.

(Literary Element) Theme:  The theme as it is refered to in literature is the overwriting subject of the story. What is the story based around?  No matter where in the story the reader is at, they will have a strong sense of where the story is and where it is going because of the Theme.

(Literary Element) Structure/Unity:  The structure/unity of a story refers to the way that the story or poem is built.  Within poetry, the structure can set a specific rhyming pattern.  In a story it it the overlying way that the story fits together.  Does the story flow?  Does it make sense?  Is it in sequential order? (Or not sequential on purpose?)  This is all thanks to Structure and Unity in a story.  It is what makes the story "tick".
