MSET 361 Microcomputers in the Classroom (Spring '08)

UNM Digital Portfolio

Sample of work:  Webbie Book template. This is the storyboard template.  It is then copied and pasted into another template in order to be printed out, stapled, and used as a book.  It can be used for anything from learning about states (such as this one), to animals and even more.  Because of copyright issues, pictures that were originally in the boxes on the left have been removed.

Florida – The Sunshine State

Tallahassee – You don’t have to be able to spell the name correctly…or even say it for that matter, in order to visit the bustling capital of Florida!  There’s something for everyone in the family.  From museums, to a blues and jazz festival, and even an aquarium where the kids can learn about marine life by sight and touch!

One thing that makes Florida so beautiful is the fragrant Orange Blossom.  Florida and Oranges go hand in hand.  During orange season, see these flowers scattered all over the central and south area of the state.

Florida has nearly two thousand acres of wetland!  Not only does this provide fisheries, shrimp, oysters, and crabs (all of which make for wonderful native, fresh, Florida cuisine), but there is plenty to explore at the wetlands as well!  Kayaking and  exploring wildlife are among the most popular ways to see the wetlands up close and personal!

Speaking of wildlife in the wetlands, while you are here, check out the Manatees, the birds, and of course the alligators!

What has made Florida so popular?  The beaches of course!  Travel the coast and have your choice at any number of styles of beaches available.  Miami beaches come with a fun nightlife, while the beaches of Siesta Key are mellow and nice for relaxing.  Try them all…if you have time!

Another fun way to spend the day in Florida is by snorkeling on the coral reefs.  It is perfect for exploring the different species of water life.  You’ll be amazed at all of the different colors and types of fish you’ll be able to see on your exploration.

If you’re ready to take your fun to an entirely different level, try going to Disney World!  This family friendly amusement park has something for the entire family.  Rides, games, food, fireworks, and a parade are just a few ways you can spend your day…or days here!

If you aren’t all for taking in Florida’s sea life…well, at the beach, then try going to Sea World!  It’s the perfect opportunity to see whales, sharks, and of course the famous dolphin show.

Spring Training.  All you men out there, need we say more?  The Boston Red Sox have their preseason training in Ft. Myers from February 5th through March 4th.  If you aren’t a Red Sox fan, then watch them as they play against the Twins, Braves, or any number of teams while paying less than you would for regular season tickets!

Reflection

I had no idea how much technology could be integrated into the classroom until I took this class.  This was probably one of the most exciting and applicable classes that I have taken in my entire schooling, high school and below included.  I have known for quite some time that the children that I will be working with are “digital natives” and they need activities and learning time that is geared in that sector in order for it to really connect to their everyday lives.  I remember as a child I loved cleaning my teachers’ overhead projectors.  Now I’ve realized that overheads and Oregon Trail are only the basic building blocks of what can be used in the classroom.  It was so exciting to learn about webbie books, picture quilts, and webquests.  I think that a lot of times children are at home and exposed to technology, but then they come to school and have a hard time sitting in a desk reading a book.  Don’t get me wrong, I am a HUGE fan of print books, but they crave to learn and work with their hands, and computers are, I believe, the way to get them excited in school again.
