Prerequisite Skills:

Ability to use their 5 senses, ability to draw and replicate what the see inside of the pumpkin.

Practice/Assess

Guided Practice:  We will begin by doing an overview of what the 5 senses are – recording answers to their brainstorming on the board.  We will then read “Pumpkin, Pumpkin”.  Afterwards, they will go to their seats and I will take the pumpkin apart.  I will put the insides of the pumpkin on paper plates and pass them around and allow different tables to come up and feel the inside of the pumpkin.

Assessment:

Group participation, completion of pumpkin activity.

Reflection

This class really changed my perspective on teaching science.  I have always loved science as a personal hobby, but didn't really see myself being able to teach in depth concepts.  Taking this course really made me realize that I am a capable teacher.  We had quite a bit of practicum time preparing science lessons and teaching them in our grade level of choice.  This helped me to become comfortable teaching a subject that I had never really considered my "strong suit".
Vickie was a teacher that was so encouraging and it was evident she cared about our career and passion for teaching.  She taught this course in a way that showed us how to encorporate science into every part of our day.  Thematic units are very powerful and it would be so easy to create a theme that is based on science (ie: pets, insects, dinosaurs, habitats, astronomy...).
